Brazil - Floods and landslides, update (ECHO 28 Mar 2024)

The number of casualties and damage continues to rise, following the heavy rainfall that has been affecting south-eastern Brazil, causing floods and triggering landslides.
As of 27 March, according to the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and media reports, at least 20 fatalities have been reported in Espirito Santo State, of whom 18 in Mimoso do Sul and 2 in Apiacá Municipalities (southern Espirito Santo State). In addition, seven people are still missing and 7,708 people have been displaced throughout the Espirito Santo State. Several highways are closed due to landslides. The most affected Municipalities are Apiacá, Mimoso do Sul, Vargem Alta Muniz Freire and Bom Jesus do Norte.
Over the next 24 hours, more rainfall is forecast over southern Espirito Santo States.

Mexico - Wildfires, update (ECHO 28 Mar 2024)

Several wildfires have been burning across Mexico since 15 March, causing casualties and damage. The major ongoing active fire is across Guerrero and Mexico States, and according to the JRC Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS), this wildfires has burnt an area of approximately 9,100 ha.
According to media, as of 27 March, at least four people died in Mexico State and a total of 400 wildfires, with 116 still active fires, have burnt more than 13,000 ha.
Over the next 24 hours, according to the JRC Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS), the fire danger forecast remains from high to very extreme in most of the western part of the Country.

Madagascar - Tropical cyclone GAMANE, update (ECHO 28 Mar 2024)

Tropical cyclone GAMANE is crossing northern Madagascar weakening, and on 28 March at 0.00 (UTC), its centre was located inland over the Andapa District area, Sava Region with maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h (tropical depression).
According to media reports, heavy rainfall and floods have affected the Regions of Sava, Diana Sofia, Analanjirofo, Alaotra Mangoro and Atsinanana and resulted in six fatalities (one in Mananara North, three in Maroantsetra, one in Toamasina and another in Vavatenina), one still missing person and more than 2,600 affected people.
GAMANE is forecast to move southeast still inland and go towards the sea, south of Masoala Peninsula on 28 March in the evening.
For the next 24 hours, moderate to very heavy rainfall and strong winds are still forecast over northern, north-eastern and central-eastern Madagascar. A blue warning for post-cyclone is in effect for the Regions of Diana, Sava, Ambatosoa and Analanjirofo.
