  • Heavy rainfall continues to affect most of Kenya and the wider Horn of Africa region, causing rivers to overflow, floods, flash floods and triggering landslides that have resulted in more casualties and widespread damage.
  • Counties are affected (out of 47 throughout the whole Kenya) whereas the worst affected are the eastern and north-eastern ones, bordering with Somalia and Ethiopia, respectively.
  • The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), as of 24 November, a total of 71 fatalities, over 45,000 displaced and a total of nearly 95,800 affected families throughout Kenya. In addition, KRCS also reports thousands of destroyed houses and several destroyed and flooded schools and hospitals across the affected counties.
  • Over the next 96 hours, more heavy rainfall with locally very heavy rainfall is forecast over most of the country, including the already affected area.

  • Heavy rainfall continues to affect the Horn of Africa region - Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia - since the beginning of the Deyr rainy season that lasts from early October to December, aggravated by the El Nino effect, causing the overflow of rivers, floods, flash floods and triggering landslides resulting in casualties and widespread damage.
  • According to DG ECHO and UN UCHA reports, as of 21 November, a total of at least 124 fatalities were reported, of whom 50 across Kenya, 33 in Ethiopia and 41 in Somalia. The number of displaced people is reportedly over 1.1 million throughout the three countries of whom 649,000 in Somalia, 371,300 in Ethiopia and 121,505 in Kenya. In addition, a total of more than 2.74 million people were affected across the region, 1.7 million in Somalia, 760,000 in Ethiopia and 281,880 in Kenya.
  • Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall with locally very heavy rainfall is forecast over the whole Kenya, the neighbouring central-southern Somalia and most of Ethiopia.
Kenya, Late October 2023Local media in Kenya reported fatalities and material damages caused by heavy rain and floods in Marsabit and Busia counties from late October 2023. Heavy rain continued with flooding reported in numerous counties including Mandera, Samburu, Meru, Isiolo, Makueni, Kitui, Garissa, Tana River, Wajir, Nandi and Turkana, as well as areas of Mombassa. Communities in Mandera County were among the hardest hit. On 08 November, UNOCHA reported 10,230 households (61,380 people) affected across the country, with 36,000 people displaced and 17 fatalities. Thousands of livestock perished and wide areas of agricultural farmland were damaged.
